Contaminants in the atmosphere affect air quality and cause repercussions on the environment and health, as there are substances that reach higher than normal concentrations in the environment, causing damage to human health and nature.
Lima is considered one of the cities with the highest air pollution in Latin America and various institutions such as DIGESA and SENAMHI are responsible for monitoring air quality, so the air quality visualization system must handle large amounts of data of different concentrations.
In this sense, the graduates Alexandra Encalada Malca and Javier Cochachi Bustamante of the Professional Career of Environmental Engineering of the Universidad Peruana Unión (UPeU), as part of their research to obtain the professional title under the Thesis in article format modality, along with other professionals including the Engineer Javier Linkolk López Gonzales, professor of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of this university, published the research article entitled «A Spatio-Temporal Visualization Approach of PM10 Concentration Data in Metropolitan Lima», in the Swiss journal Atmosphere indexed in Scopus and Web of Science.
The study focuses on developing a spatiotemporal visualization approach for the exploration of PM10 concentration data in Metropolitan Lima. It is important to mention that PM10 is defined as small solid or liquid particles of dust, soot or metallic particles dispersed in the atmosphere and can be generated by vehicular transport, among others.
For this purpose, they had access to data from 5 air quality monitoring stations of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI).
The results of this study showed that the east of the metropolitan area had higher concentrations of PM10 than the stations located in the center and north, which had better air quality.
The station in Huachipa had the highest PM10 average and the Carabayllo station was the only one that complied with the Environmental Quality Standard for air quality.
It was also concluded that meteorological variables do not indicate a relationship with respect to PM10 levels but that particulate matter concentrations are related to the urban characteristics of each district.
In this way, this approach will open bridges between the agencies in charge of monitoring air quality and they will be able to propose policies in favor of environmental care to reduce air pollution.
Thus, the Universidad Peruana Unión emphasizes continuous improvement and promotes scientific production from the undergraduate level to fulfill the mission with the efforts of graduates, teachers and student researchers.
