Through the «Genesis Project», the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the UPeU campus Tarapoto seeks the conservation and preservation of bees, especially the Apis melifera and Melipon species, with the intention of creating an apiary and a meliponary within the UPeU campus.
Architect John Gonzales, who is in charge of the activity, says that «this project seeks to emphasize the creationist principle, since these species of bees are currently in danger of extinction in different regions of Peru and America because farmers take care of their crops with pesticides that kill the bees».
Likewise, currently in the San Martin region there are around 150 species of bees, of which the Genesis Project conserves 12 that are in danger of extinction, since these species are characterized by being stingless bees and represent a potential in agroforestry systems mainly due to their function as pollinators.
In addition, the conservation project seeks in the future to relocate the species in a land of 90 hectares in the city of Yurimaguas. The purpose of the relocation is to generate natural pollination and reproduction on the land and to use and sell the honey, pollen and royal jelly. The project also seeks to create a future alliance between the UPeU Tarapoto campus and the Peruvian Beekeeping Association.
Finally, UPeU has become the first university in the San Martin region to initiate a conservation and sustainable project with endangered bee species, initially involving the FIA, which hopes to expand with the collaboration of the entire UPeU community and invite the external community to be part of this initiative.
