The students of the VIII cycle from the Professional School of Architecture at the Universidad Peruana Unión Campus, Tarapoto, believe in contributing to social initiatives that empower communities. During the course on “Intervention In Urban and Architectural Heritage, the department carried out a social project called “Generating Smiles” which focused on the remodeling of the columns with abstract designs in the lounge of the Virgen del Pilar children’s shelter located in the city of Tarapoto.
This shelter receives abandoned children, providing them with a home, care, education and food. Therefore, the most benefited from this remodeling project are the children. The primary objective behind the implementation of this Project is to transform a learning environment and thus gradually develop artistic sensitivity to painting and an approach to a period of history and art.
Architect Liz Blaz, teacher of the Urban and Architectural Heritage Intervention course, said that «it is of utmost importance that students carry out projects like these that not only resolve problems and add beauty but also create attractive environments for the children at the shelter».
Josefa Jesús Ramón Minga, director of the children’s village said, “I thank the UPeU Tarapoto Campus for giving us a helping hand. Our children love the environment which now is colorful and inspires them through art to one day be professionals who would help those who need it the most».
