Machine Learning is a discipline in the field of Artificial Intelligence that allows computers to identify patterns and make predictions. In recent years, Machine Learning has experienced a great growth. Technological and computational development has led to the collection of large volumes of data, giving rise to a new discipline known as Data Science, which generates innovative solutions from data. Therefore, Machine Learning is one of the main tools used by data scientists.

In this context, the Latin American Regional Section of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC-LARS), the IASC-LARS School on

Computational Statistics and Data Science, the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI), organized the Webinar Course entitled «Machine Learning for Data Science», from September 27 to 30 of this year.

MSc. Javier Linkolk López Gonzales, associate professor at the Peruvian Union University was part of the team of speakers who developed various topics together with other distinguished professionals, including Ph.D. Rodrigo Salas Fuentes, who taught at the event; Ph.D. candidate Ayleen Bertini and Ph.D. Marvin Querales, professors from the Valparaíso University from Chile.

Undergraduate and graduate students from various institutions around the world participated in the event on topics which were taught in an English-Spanish format in three sessions each day. Theoretical sessions and practical activities were developed to complement the teaching using the Python language. Machine Learning models were also applied to problems related to the environment and health. On Wednesday, September 29, MSc. López developed the following research topics: Pattern recognition in Machine Learning, Air pollution with Deep Learning techniques and Time series with singular spectrum analysis.

MSc. Javier Linkolk López Gonzales is a member of the IASC-ISI and a graduate in Statistical Engineering and Computer Science from the Peruvian Union University (UPeU). He also has a Master’s degree in Metrology (PUC-Rio). Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate in Statistics at the University of Valparaiso, Chile and works as an associate professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of UPeU.

It is important to mention that the courses of the International Association for Statistical Computing aim to disseminate advances in Latin America and the world. Also, to increase the number of researchers and professionals in computational statistics and data science.
